Methodology
How our calculators do the math
Every estimate is transparent. Here are the exact formulas, constants, and assumptions behind each calculator — no black boxes.
Constants used
- 1 acre = 43,560 ft²
- 1 m² = 10.7639 ft²
- 1 ft³ = 7.48052 US gallons
- 1 m³ = 264.172 US gallons
- 1 in = 1/12 ft; 1 mm = 1/304.8 ft
- Coverage density: 10 balls/ft² (108/m²), forming a 91% layer — per AWTT published data
Evaporation & water-loss savings
The evaporation calculator estimates the water a cover keeps in the basin each year:
- Convert surface area to ft² (acres × 43,560, or m² × 10.7639).
- Convert the annual evaporation depth to feet (inches ÷ 12, or mm ÷ 304.8). Presets: arid ≈ 60 in/yr, moderate ≈ 40 in/yr, humid ≈ 25 in/yr, or enter a custom depth.
- Gross annual loss (ft³) = area (ft²) × evaporation depth (ft/yr).
- Water saved = gross loss × reduction %. The slider defaults to 88% and is capped at Armor Ball®'s up to 90% reduction.
- Convert to gallons (× 7.48052) and m³ (÷ 264.172).
- Dollars saved = (gallons ÷ 1,000) × your $/1,000 gal, or m³ × your $/m³.
Simple payback (optional) = your estimated installed project cost ÷ annual dollars saved. We never pre-fill pricing.
Coverage & units needed
The coverage calculator sizes the order:
- Balls needed ≈ surface area (ft²) × 10 (or area in m² × 108).
- Example: a 1-acre pond = 43,560 ft² × 10 ≈ 435,600 balls.
This is a planning estimate; final quantities are confirmed on quoting to account for pond geometry, walls, freeboard, and equipment areas.
Heat-loss ROI
The heat-loss calculator estimates heating-cost savings from R-2 floating insulation:
- Annual saving = your current annual heating cost × heat-loss reduction %.
- Reduction defaults to 70% (the figure AWTT cites for Armor Ball®; up to ~75% for AQUA).
- Simple payback (optional) = estimated installed project cost ÷ annual saving.
Assumptions & limitations
- Results are planning estimates, not guarantees. Real performance depends on climate, wind, sunlight, water chemistry, and site conditions.
- Performance figures (up to 90% evaporation reduction, R-2 insulation, up to 70% heating-cost reduction, 10 balls/ft²) are per AWTT published data.
- Calculations run in your browser; no data is stored, and pricing is never fabricated.

FAQ
About the methodology
- Are the calculator results guarantees?
- No. They are transparent planning estimates based on the formulas and confirmed Armor Ball® performance figures below. Actual results depend on local climate, wind, and site conditions; AWTT confirms quantities and performance on quoting.
- Where do the performance figures come from?
- The default reduction figures — up to 90% evaporation reduction, up to 70% heating-cost reduction (up to ~75% for AQUA), and 10 balls/ft² coverage — are per AWTT published data.
- Do the calculators store or price my project?
- No. Calculations run entirely in your browser, and we never pre-fill or fabricate pricing — payback is only shown if you enter your own estimated project cost.
